Review of the Memorandum of Understanding between Sydney Water Corporation and the Environment Protection Authority

Revised Memorandum of Understanding

Following consultation with Sydney Water and public exhibition of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Sydney Water Corporation and the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) (PDF 1.77MB), from 23 October to 22 November 2014, a revised Memorandum of Understanding was created and is now in operation.

Section 35 of the Sydney Water Act 1994 and Sydney Water's Operating Licence require a Memorandum of Understanding between Sydney Water Corporation and the) the EPA. The Memorandum of Understanding provides the foundation for a co-operative relationship between the two organisations; recognising the EPA's role as an environmental regulator and Sydney Water's commitment to meet its environmental obligations.

The first Memorandum of Understanding was developed in 1996, and was subsequently revised in 2002, 2006 and 2011. The latest revised Memorandum of Understanding incorporates comments from the EPA Board and NSW Ombudsman including a clear statement on the EPA's role as regulator, particularly during the event of an environmental incident.
